The Larry Collins Award

From time to time PSPA recognizes a ski patroller as its recipient for the Larry Collins Memorial Award. The award can be earned for a single meritorious act during the ski season or for significant contributions to ski patrolling over a period of years.

Larry Collins exemplified the qualities we look for in a patroller. In addition to being a conscientious patroller, he showed great perseverance and determination, as it took him three tries before he was successful in passing the PSPA exam. He then went on to become one of our best presidents, overseeing the expansion of PSPA in addition to providing much needed stability and efficiency. Mr. Collins eventually relocated to the West, where he was instrumental in establishing the Western division of PSPA. He died tragically shortly after returning to New Hampshire.

The individual selected by the Board of Directors does not necessarily have to be a PSPA member, but should be a full time patroller.

The Larry Collins Award was presented to Bob Brown by the PSPA Vice President, Carl Chaplin.

Oct 16th 2010

The 2009 – 2010 Larry Collins Award was awarded to a Patroller whom through his actions has shown a lifetime commitment to Patrolling. Robert “Bob” Brown  started patrolling in 1958 and has celebrated his 52 year as a member of the National Ski Patrol.
Bob has received many certifications and awards over the year. Senior Patroller, S&T trainer, CPR Instructor, OEC Instructor, MTR, Avalanche,  Jr. Program Trainer, NH Region Outstanding Patroller of the Year award, NSP Yellow Star, NSP National Appointment, NSP Distinguished Service Award . He has also taken the management  lead as an Assistant Patrol Director, Assistant Region Director, NH Region Southern Section Chief (several times) & NH Region Director.

Bob currently patrols several days a week (both midweek and weekends) at Ragged Mountain in NH where even after 52 years as a patroller he is the first one out the door on the work details and always willing to lend a hand. He has maintained his first aid and skiing skills throughout the years and has no trouble navigating both the groomed and natural snow trails, as well as heading into the many woods Ragged is known for.

Perhaps the highest praise one can give a fellow patroller is to say in all honesty, “If I were hurt in the woods on a steep pitch, wrapped around a tree I would feel comfortably if Bob showed up first”.

Thanks Bob and keep up the good work.
